An eventful week for Welsh sport

A huge achievement for Welsh football this week, which has taken on a Premier League heavyweight. It’s time for the weekly round-up with Sport W.

In the middle of the week, Cardiff City caused an upset by beating Burnley (2-1), a Premier League club, confirming its ability to compete with the elite. At the same time, Wrexham dominated Reading (2-0), continuing its impressive run of form. These two victories highlight the good health of Welsh football. The competition will continue with a derby between the Bluebirds and the Red Dragons, who will face each other in the next round on 28 October. And that’s not the only surprise in this draw, as Swansea will have to take on the mighty Manchester City in the next round. Alan Sheehan’s men will be hoping to repeat their 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.

As for the championship, things are more complicated… The Swans were unable to beat Millwall, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. It’s been a mixed start to the season, leaving Swansea languishing in a meagre 13th place in the table for now. Things are no better for Wrexham, who also drew 1-1 at home against Derby County. Phil Parkinson’s men have to settle for 15th place before facing Leicester. Finally, Cardiff won 2-0 away at Wigan and are in 4th place, three points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

Let’s now turn to rugby with the first day of the United Rugby Championship, which took place this weekend. Cardiff Rugby won 33-20 at home against the Lions. At the same time, Osprey lost 55-40 away to the Bulls. The Swansea team will have to bounce back next Friday against the Stormers. Cardiff and Osprey are 5th and 10th in the league respectively.

Now let’s move on to cycling. After a rather interesting season, punctuated by injuries, particularly in the Giro, Joshua Tarling has been selected for the European Championships by the British team. In these championships, which will take place in France, Joshua can hope for a medal in the time trial, in which he was European champion in 2023. See you this Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. for the start of the event.
