Sunday 27 July was the last stage of the 2025 Tour de France, but it also meant retirement for Geraint Thomas. It was a quiet end for the Welsh cyclist, but an accomplished career on the whole.
While all eyes were on Wout Van Aert, who won on the Champs Élysées, and Tadej Pogacar, who won his 4th Tour de France, a former yellow jersey crossed one of the last finish lines of his career. Geraint Thomas will have tried everything in this 2025 edition, taking several breakaways, but to no avail.
The Ineos rider doesn’t have the legs of yesteryear, and the man’s achievements are truly remarkable: he won the yellow jersey in the 2018 Tour de France, but he also reached the other two steps of the podium with a second place in 2019 and a third place in 2022. He also won the overall classification at Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Welsh rider was equally a luxury team-mate for Chris Froome when the latter won his 4 Tour de France. A climber as well as a rouleur, he was also World Champion and Olympic Track Champion in the team pursuit.
After 15 years of loyalty to the Ineos team, formerly Sky, the 39-year-old cyclist is officially leaving the professional world in September.
